Rukungiri: Centenary Bank Rukungiri Branch has today donated assorted items to more than 150 people living in a ghetto in Rukungiri Town.
The donated items included mattresses, clothing, blankets, sanitary pads, soap, bodyjerry, shoes, books, pens, salt, and rice. The handover ceremony took place this morning, April 18, at B13 Ghetto in Kinyasano Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
Speaking at the event, the branch manager, Brian Kasaija, said that staff of Centenary Bank collected money during the Lent period to support vulnerable communities. He explained that they chose to assist the ghetto youth as a way of supporting those living in difficult conditions.
He encouraged the youth not to lose hope but to work hard and learn how to save money so they can start small income-generating activities in the future.
The assistant manager, Mark Muhwezi, also pledged continued support to the community.
The chairperson of B13 Ghetto, Isaac Mugumya commonly known as Ghetto Giant, together with Santrina Arinda, who represents female ghetto residents, expressed their appreciation to Centenary Bank for its generosity. They said the support would motivate them to continue working hard and cooperating with one another for a better future.
They noted that many residents live in poor conditions, lacking basic needs such as proper shelter, clothing, and scholastic materials.
Meanwhile, the Rukungiri District Ghetto Speaker, Smoky Fat Uganda, and NRM cadre Robert Nuwamanya, who is also a ghetto youth, called on the public and district authorities to stop labeling ghetto residents as criminals. Instead, they urged people to see them as responsible citizens striving to improve their lives.
